The second picture is a screenshot of the applied "Channel Mixer" adjustment.Darktable is an open source photography workflow application and raw developer. In the first picture below, devided along the diagonal, you can see in the bottom-right half the result of contrast and sharpening (still quite yellowish), and the output after the color adjustment in the top-left half. The final step is the refinement of the general color, using the "Channel Mixer" in this picture I wanted to achieve a somewhat cooler gray, basically adding some of the red and green channel to the blue one. In this specific example, I mostly added a copy of scale 3 and a touch of additional scale 4, both mitigated with luminosity masks. I like to preserve it as much as possible and some of the scales are directly affecting it. A special care must be taken in these negatives due to the grain of the film. The I do the main of the treatment in GIMP, mostly using luminosity masks and wavelet decompositions. The first is used for the initial inversion, a basic contrast and exposure adjustment and a first gray-scale conversion (which is anyhow just basically a desaturation that still yields three RGB channels). This way I can make a scan of all the shots to get an idea and select which one I'm gonna spend time on in more accurate editing.įor a selected negative, I save the output from the scanner in a 48 bit DNG file (16 bit per channel). But I have to say, it is good enough to get JPEG previews for the entire roll in a reasonable time and, interestingly, it can save the raw output from the scanner, in a good quality (that's why I still consider it a good scanner, despite of the software).
